Peacebuilding Practitioners Interview Series

We know very little about the role of religion in conflict situations and peacebuilding efforts. Religion intersects with other economic, social, political and other factors in complex ways. And faith communities are often arrayed on different sides of the same issue. In order to learn more about realities on the ground, the Center is carrying out a series of interviews with practitioners, with an initial focus on Africa. During the summer of 2009, two Center research assistants, Ilan Cooper and Jason Klocek, conducted a series of interviews with key figures in South Africa, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Sudan.
This interview series was focused on the role or religious actors in transitioning societies. It was focused in four case study examples; Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, and Sudan. This project was funded and sponsored by the Georgetown Berkley Center for Religion and International Affairs, the Georgetown Conflict Resolution Program and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) in South Africa. The interviews were conducted over a series of three weeks in late May and early June 2009. Local partners were vital to the successful completion of this work. In South Africa IJR both arranged meetings and provided office space and in Mozambique Propaz organized many of the meetings. Without such local support most of these interviews would not have been possible.
